Blogs > A day in the life of a journalist

I am a staff writer for The News-Herald Newspaper in Southgate. This blog will be about the life of a young, fresh-out-of-college journalist who is experiencing new things and learning not only about the communities I cover, but the nation and the world as a whole every day.

5 funny things in our newsroom: Volume 8

More things above and on our desks...

The pink and purple feather magnet is confused by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Don't worry magnet, none of us every really understood them...

Yoda <3s Reese's Pieces.

Welcome to our superhero (cough, nerd, cough) department...

Desk gnomes! Enough said.

Do not even consider stealing this desk! We mean business when we write upside down on napkins.
 That's right!

Come back next week for more funny things from our newsroom! :)

5 funny things in our newsroom: Volume 7

Things above, on and below our desks...

A balanced diet: diabetic shakes and sugar-loaded soda. Yes, these are under the same desk.

Not as creepy as the troll, but still pretty weird.

Hello, Maggs.

More flags and trinkets please!

Always watching...

5 funny things in our newsroom: Volume 5

Coffee style!
It's practically a requirement to be a caffeine addict to be a journalist. We definitely meet that requirement in our newsroom.

These only belong to a few of us. Can you tell we utilize coffee mugs often?

The center of the third biggest conspiracy in the office. Who finishes the pot of coffee and doesn't start a new one? We will find you and when we do, you'll be making coffee for the rest of your life!

This was a gift to me. Some people tell me I have caffeine running through my veins. Guess what? So do all my coworkers.Don't judge me!

Only the best thing to ever happen to us. Our very own Keurig vending machine!
My own stash of Keurig K-cups to use with the machine. If I wasn't such a coffee addict myself, I would consider selling these for less than the vending and making a profit. Again, don't judge me!

5 funny things in our newsroom: Volume 4

We're not really sure when the holiday ends here. When is this scandal? I want to participate! Pick me, pick me!

Why, hello, green troll who sits on a coworker's desk creepily staring at me every time I walk by.
Our new toy! It makes decisions for you.
Should I write this story? Definitely!
Is there going to be a lot of crime today? Maybe.
Does my hair look good? Ask a friend.
My friend said my hair looks terrible. Try again!
Told you it would die. Nothing can survive in this newsroom.
Somehow we ALWAYS have junk food in our department. Apparently people heard about the starving, poor journalists here. Happy snacking!

5 funny things in our newsroom: Volume 1

To brighten your day and give you a good chuckle, every week I am going to take pictures of five hilarious things that are in, or happen in, our newsroom here at The News-Herald.

This is our white board. We write random things on here, our boss writes when timesheets are due or when there are meetings and sometimes people write about who is pregnant on the board. It's main purpose, however, is to write when one of us has time off or will be late (whether we have the day off or will be in court).
Note the bottom line. Our staff writer David Komer is at the North Pole this morning, he will return in the afternoon. Interesting. I'm jealous.

Another board to tell our bosses where we are.Except instead it tells us four crucially important details about our newsroom: Sanity is always out, Elvis is always in, good taste is always in and Bob is always in ... although I've never met him.

These two pictures count as one item: lack of life. We have dead plants hanging from the ceiling and sitting on our desks. Enough said.

This lively Poinsettia goes along with the previous pictures. However, it's a symbol of how long things live here. It just arrived here yesterday. I'm posting a picture now so when I post one next week of it wilted, you'll get my point.

This is Jackie Brown! She came to visit our newsroom and signed autographs for all of us! Or someone who wants to be like her pretended to be her and signed a piece of paper with a black-and-white picture of the movie cover on it ... same thing, right?
 See ya next time! :)
