Blogs > A day in the life of a journalist

I am a staff writer for The News-Herald Newspaper in Southgate. This blog will be about the life of a young, fresh-out-of-college journalist who is experiencing new things and learning not only about the communities I cover, but the nation and the world as a whole every day.

Age and enemies; Roadblocks for young journalists

Webster's dictionary says the definition of age is: the length of an existence extending from the beginning to any given time.

I get insulted often for being a journalist, it comes along with the job. What shouldn't come along with the job is being insulted for being a YOUNG journalist.

Age doesn't define intelligence, responsibility, maturing or honesty. IT DOESN'T. I understand that people my age do stupid things and cause reasonable doubt, but guess what? I've seen and dealt with MANY adults who are far older than me and much less intelligent.

Yes, I'm young. But that doesn't mean I'm naive, stupid or disrespectful. And it doesn't give anyone a reason to accuse me of being anything besides young.

Yesterday someone hashed out on me over the use of social media for stories. Mind you, we are encouraged - practically required -  by our bosses to use social media as much as humanly possible to promote our stories. I'm not trying to sneak around and do anything I'm not supposed to just because I'm young. Believe it or not I'm just as capable, responsible and mature as most adults who are 20-30 years older than me.

I graduated college in three years. I got this job the day before I graduated college. I'm respected by most people I work with and deal with. Don't insult or judge someone just because you don't understand the changes in the industry and the new platforms we are encouraged to use.

So I made another enemy, it won't affect me.

I'm a young, motivated, determined, responsible, honest journalist with a pleasant attitude - until you insult me and my intentions and wrongly me accuse of things.

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." - Winston Churchill
